Synopsis:
Dr. Kelley Skeff's presentation will highlight the challenges
and opportunities
in medicine and medical education today. As the director of the
Stanford internal medicine residency program, Dr. Skeff
is keenly aware of the new requirements and goals of training in the United States,
specifically, Stanford's research in training faculty to train new
physicians. In addition to demonstrating SkolarMD,
Dr. Skeff will discuss how Stanford's programs
focus on both the enhancement of clinical training, and the improvement of
the educational system to train physicians to be more effective as contributors
to quality improvement in their institution. Dr. Skeff
will highlight where the resources in SkolarMD would
be suitable and successful in achieving these goals.
About
the speaker:
Dr. Skeff is Professor of Medicine, Residency Program
Director, and Associate Chair for Educational Programs in the Department of
Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. His major impact
has been his work in the Stanford
Faculty Development
Center, which has
focused on teaching the teachers to become national, regional, and local
resources for the improvement of medical education. Over its duration,
the program has trained over 250 facilitators from institutions in ten
countries. These faculty facilitators have then trained more than
15,000 clinical faculty and residents at their own institutions.
Recently, the Stanford
Center has focused on
the improvement of not only clinical teaching, but also basic science
teaching in medical schools. He has received a number of awards for his
accomplishments, including the Flexner Award for Distinguished Service to
Medical Education from the American Association of Medical Colleges in 2002
and has been chosen as one of the 2003 Joy McCann Scholars acknowledging his
work in mentoring. Dr. Skeff is also the
chair of the editorial board for SkolarMD.
